The Sounds-Write Program methods works well with children who are having difficulties learning to read and write effectively. It is a synthetic phonics program that works because it is highly structure, cumulative, sequential, explicit and code orientated.

Sounds-Write’s instructional method works effectively because it:

is developmentally appropriate for beginning readers in pre-primary, Year 1 and Year 2
offers fast and highly effective intervention for children at all levels who have fallen behind in their reading and spelling
is a real phonic programme that teaches in simple steps how the sounds of the language are represented by the writing system
teaches the three essential skills of segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation necessary for reading and spelling throughout the programme daily until all pupils achieve the automaticity that underlies the fluency of every successful reader.

Central Auditory
Processing Disorder

Individuals with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (also called Auditory Processing Disorder) have normal hearing thresholds (abilities). Still, mechanisms in the pathway from the ear to the part of the brain that processes sound are impaired.

Auditory Processing includes mechanisms that preserve, refine, analyse, modify, and interpret information from auditory information. When there is a breakdown in one or more mechanisms along this pathway, the result is a central auditory processing disorder.

These mechanisms underlie the following skills: Decoding, Auditory discrimination, Binaural Processing, Temporal Processing, Spatial Processing, Listening to noise, Auditory Memory, Organisation, and Integration.

My son (2 years) was not communicating and did not stop screaming. We came down from Karratha for an Autism Assessment and on the last day of testing (and the last day of our stay) the speech therapist asked for a hearing test to rule out hearing loss before giving the formal autism diagnosis.
