Claire Lariviere

Claire is a dual-qualified audiologist and speech pathologist. She qualified at the University of The Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

She has worked in the field of hearing assessment, auditory processing assessment and auditory training for more than 20 years. She is passionate about helping people to improve their hearing and understanding of speech.

Claire has presented on her work in APD at national and international conferences. She has also had articles published on her work in Auditory Processing Therapy.

Central Auditory
Processing Disorder

Individuals with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (also called Auditory Processing Disorder) have normal hearing thresholds (abilities). Still, mechanisms in the pathway from the ear to the part of the brain that processes sound are impaired.

Auditory Processing includes mechanisms that preserve, refine, analyse, modify, and interpret information from auditory information. When there is a breakdown in one or more mechanisms along this pathway, the result is a central auditory processing disorder.

These mechanisms underlie the following skills: Decoding, Auditory discrimination, Binaural Processing, Temporal Processing, Spatial Processing, Listening to noise, Auditory Memory, Organisation, and Integration.

Claire has been working with my son to provide therapy and support for his Auditory Processing Disorder. My son (2 years) was not communicating and did not stop screaming. We came down from Karratha for an Autism Assessment and on the last day of testing (and the last day of our stay) the speech therapist asked for a hearing test to rule out hearing loss before giving the formal autism diagnosis. Claire fitted us in at the last minute, discovered that my son had severe glue ear and recommended us to see an ENT. My son had grommets inserted and his screaming has stopped and he has started talking.
